I was trying to import a DXF logo exported from Illustrator to PCBnew but KiCad simply shows me “No graphic items found in file to import”. The DXF format was 2000LT/2000. I also tried other different formats such as R13/LT95, R14/LT98/LT97, 2005/2006/2007 etc. None of them are supported in KiCad. Why is this such a difficult thing ? How are we supposed to generate a DXF file specifically for KiCad ?
The KiCad version is 5.1.5-3 running on a Windows 7 machine. I’m also attaching the DXF file.
I just exported my logo to DWG since Illustrator did not have “R12” and then converted that DWG to R12 DXF using CloudConvert (https://cloudconvert.com/dwg-to-dxf). It is still not working.
If you or someone else could show a sane way of doing it at least once, that would be really helpful. Also why doesn’t KiCad support SVG ? That could’ve made everything less painful.
Unfortunately, your logo is generated using “hatches”. We don’t currently support these types of structures in the DXF import. You can open a bug report for this feature if you’d like to see it included in the future.
Thanks for that insight. I will add a bug report/feature request for that. But for the time being, what’s my best option to get my logo to PCBnew ? Will InkScape be any use ?
I do not have AutoCad for now. But let me see what I can do. Still could you please tell why KiCad wouldn’t support SVG or any alternate vector formats. Since KiCad isn’t a 2D drafting application, it should provide wide support for other file formats. But I know like everybody else you guys work hard to make KiCad better in every release which is much appreciated. I hope KiCad will support more formats in the future.
I tried opening your file in Inkscape 0.92.4 in linux. I just got a blank screen. I tried all 3 input options–Manual scale, Automatic scaling to size A4, and Read from file. No difference.
I am unfamiliar with .dxf files. I appended the Inkscape help submenu in case it helps you think of a way-around.
