General Advice and Recommendations for a Novice!

This is an area where coders have an advantage. Since all files are human readable a script can rip through them pretty quick. Text editor search and replace might be next best but there are others better suited to answer that one than I am.

BOOM! All micro’s gone, only two tracks to update.

For me (kicad 4.0.6) it uses the same color scheme as the legacy canvas. What kicad version/operating system are you using? (Newer nightly might be different because there you have more color options than in the stable version.)

The layer colors can be changed by middle or double clicking on the small colored square next to the layer names.
Not sure if the background color can be changed.

Seriously? In any case it is irrelevant at this point as I have pointed out there is a ground track rather than using the ground plane.

Read the answers above. There has been a misunderstanding.

It was my misconception of a via. Having not worked with multi-layer before I thought it was only for top & bottom.

Now in OpenGL mode, the dark overlay has since disappeared. Liking it a lot, much easier to lay stuff out smartly. I’ll report back once I’ve nailed all the VIA’s.

@1.21Gigawatts is correct. That’s why I liked his post.

Just so there is no dis-ambiguity here:

A huge thank you to everyone who chipped in with suggestions. I switched to OpenGL mode and redid most the tracks properly, wiped all the micro/blind/buried and made a much better job of it. It feels cleaner and I’m now happy with it. There’s also the small fact it’ll now cost 400% less.

Suite! I’m glad you feel better about it. That counts.

There are still a few tracks with some odd branching but otherwise it is certainly an improvement over the previous layout. Have you managed to move all of the silkscreen off the pads and out from under components? There is a lot more clearance around your vias than is necessary.

So you figured out how to get the fab to pay you for the privilege of making your board? Excellent!

Edit: There are videos on YouTube that explain the process of manufacturing a PCB and would help you to understand why blind/buried and micro vias have such as effect on the manufacturing cost. They are really only practical for larger volume production runs.

Re: silkscreen, I just turned off the render and won’t give them the Gerber layers of it. That’ll do it right?

It’s certainly a lot less stressed for space than it was. Has a healthier feel to it. Using smaller via’s made all the difference.
