I have same symthoms like described in Backspace,left,right keys not working (topic is jus closed).
None of mentioned methods not help for me.
I use Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with KDE Plasma installed.
I have additional observation:
Backspace and arrow keys not working:
Always on my account independent which window manager I use: (Plasma/LXDE/gnome/xfce)
Only on my account other account (root & other non-root users everything works fine)
So looks like issue is somewhere in user account settigs for some specific component
I removed ~…config/kicad ~/.config/gtk3 but it doesn’t help.
I changes owner/group for me on all folders/files in my home directory but is still the same…
On all other accounts kicad all keys work fine except my own.
Have you got any suggestion?

One remark if I login locally to linux desktop PC where this app is installed using lxde problem is visble
backspaca and arrow keys doesn’t work. When I start app in remote session via xrdp mentioned keys work correclty. Probably in case of xrdp owner of some X-subsystem is different.
Another remark if I login locally (so when problem occurs) and use (press) arrow keys few times application froze then crash.
