3D Viewer missing settings to make User.1 etc visible?

Using Kicad 8.0.7

Our PCBs have some features on layer User.1. We want to see these in the 3D viewer, but 3D Viewer’s appearance panel lacks any User.N items to enable visibility of such layers.

Is there some way to fix this?

This message: Need a User Layer in PCB editor and 3D Viewer shows the preferences for 3D Viewer:

but… that’s not what it looks like for me in 8.0.7:

… and changing the “Material properties” to something other than “Realistic” seems to make no difference to the layers offered.

Any ideas?

I have posted an issue to the Kicad bug tracker:

My understanding is the “User Defined Layers” are not physical PCB layers. The 3D viewer shows physical PCB layers.
