3D model files in KiCad 9.0

I have downloaded 3D model files from component search engine in .dcm format. I am told that KiCad 9.0 accepts this format as well as .step and .wrl formats. However, I can’t get this to work. Has anybody had any experience with this issue ? Do you have to convert them first ??? Guy

.dcm isn’t a 3D model file suffix that I have heard of. Are you sure it’s a 3D model?

KiCad 5.1 had .lib and .dcm files, see here: 5.1: .lib and .dcm files. Do I need both?

An Internet search for .dcm returns the result that it’s a DICOM medical image file format.

Thanks for the reply retiredfeline. Yes, .dcm is DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine). But it seems they are using it for 3D CAD/EDA models also. This is what I got for a particular part (144-02J12SL).

Fairly new to KiCad, so some confusion !

The fact that it comes with the .lib file suggests that it’s actually the 5.1 symbol file format and not a 3D model file or a DICOM file. You can look at the file with a text editor to check. Here’s the start of Elektuur.dcm which I have lying around. The file size would also be relatively small, too small to be a 3D model.

EESchema-DOCLIB Version 2.0
#
$CMP C
D capacitor, non-polarized/bipolar
K C cap capacitor non-polarized bipolar
$ENDCMP

Wrong tree, I’m afraid.

What makes you think these are 3D models? The .pretty is the standard footprint directory library name. While .dcm was paired with .lib for schematic symbol library files

You guys are right. It appears that the file is a KiCad version 5.1 file; it is only 176 bytes. Someone gave me some bad information that *.dcm DICOM files were being used for 3D EDA models.

Well now you have the choice of abusing them for the misinformation, or disabusing them of the misinformation. Or both.
