Might help if you state your KiCad version info . . . Please use Help>About KiCAD>Copy Version Info then paste here . . .

A while back I also had the whole drawing canvas go black on me, and I created an issue for this a few months ago. I am not sure whether it’s related to your screen. blacking out.
