It might be clearer when you choose an IC but IIRC the italicized name is the exemplar of several related parts sharing the same pinouts and functions. For example I think (don’t have access to Kicad right now) all the 1N400x diodes have an entry for one and aliases for the rest.

Parts shown in italics are aliases.
Generic parts often have multiple part numbers from different vendors.
