What are the V5 Settings needed to Replicate V4 Open GL look and feel?
I just got V5 going and I know the Open GL mode is now default and renamed as the “Modern Toolset (Accelerated)”
(PCBnew>Preferences>“Modern Toolset (Accelerated)”) or F11.
I really liked the look of the old Open GL. Now the color scheme is much more like the old legacy look. I find it quite obnoxious to stare at for hours. Does anyone know if it’s possible or what settings are needed to get the old Open GL look back?
Thx. -Jake

Layer colors can be changed by middle clicking on the respective colored square next to the layer names. There is no way to import color schemes. The layer colors are stored separately for pcb new and the footprint editor.

My suggestion would be to sit down for a few minutes and play around with these settings. You should be able to find something that makes sense to you. You could even search for dark color themes on the net. Maybe you find something that you can use as an inspiration.

The config file responsible is the pcbnew file found in the config directory (~.config/kicad in linux, C:\Users\ …\AppData\Roaming\kicad for windows)

Thanks Rene,
After playing aroud with it I think I found some similar settings. If anyone is interested in doing something like this, I changed the following:

1.) Preferences > Display Options > [bottom right] Uncheck “Show Pad Clearance” > then under “Show net names:” > Select On pads > OK

2.) Layers Manager[Window] > Items[tab] > Right Click over the “Pads Front” text > Change Render Color for Pads Front > Defined Colors[tab] > on the right side set the “Opacity %” to 80 > OK

3.) Layers Manager[Window] > Items[tab] > Right Click over the “Pads Back” text > Change Render Color for Pads Back > Defined Colors[tab] > on the right side set the “Opacity %” to 80 > OK

4.) Layers Manager[Window] > Items[tab] > Right Click over the “Through Hole Pads” text > Change Render Color for Through Hole Pads > Defined Colors[tab] > on the right side set the “Opacity %” to 80 > on the left side of the window set the color to “Gray 3” > OK

5.) Layers Manager[Window] > Items[tab] > Right Click over the “Through Hole Pads” text > Change Render Color for Through Via > Defined Colors[tab] > on the right side set the “Opacity %” to 70 > on the left side of the window set the color to “Gray 3” > OK

6.) Layers Manager[Window] > **Layers[tab] > Right Click over the “F.Cu” text > Change Render Color for F.Cu > Defined Colors[tab] > on the right side set the “Opacity %” to 80 > OK

7.) Layers Manager[Window] > **Layers[tab] > Right Click over the “B.Cu” text > Change Render Color for B.Cu > Defined Colors[tab] > on the right side set the “Opacity %” to 80 > OK

That looks very similar to how I remember the old Open GL mode, although these are my adjustments purely from memory

This is one feature that I really liked having in the nightlies, that the V4 stable didn’t have, and I don’t recommend turning it off.

The rest of the visual settings I have not adjusted to maximize what is seen on my screen. The post is great to show just how flexible the display on the screen can be set up to a users preference. As such, now I will go back and see if I can change the settings to make my workflow more efficient. Thanks!
