KiCad 5.1.2.
My first PCB in mechanic aspects has many symmetries and I wont to draw (as background) some informations like where is (at the box) the sticker, where it has its transparent part, where is opening in the box, where touch panel strip comes and I wont to position mounting wholes. Positions for all these I have in relative to some 0,0 point near the PCB center. Positions are in accuracy 0.05 (comes from some distance difference of 0,9mm divided by 2).
You can position elements using mouse and entering the numbers by keyboard.
If you use mouse you can see the position relative to 0,0 set by Space hotkey.
But I didn’t found the way to enter coordinates by keyboard relative to that point.
So I moved all my PCB to be relative to absolute 0,0 origin.
Should I expect any problems from working out of the sheet?
At first I didn’t noticed any.
I only couldn’t make the empty .kicad_wks. If empty the default is used. Using default if no kicad_wks file specified is ok and good. But if I do empty file and use it in Page settings then why program knows better what I wont then me.
I hate such programs. I will report it as the bug - may be designers agree with me.
Changing the (user visible) coordinate origin will be introduced in v6 later. Until then it’s possible to move individual items with Right mouse button -> Position Relative To… Local Origin. That “local origin” is the one set with the spacebar.
OK. I see it.
But each universal solution is more complicated in use than simple one (you must specify some parameters).
At the moment I like my solution of positioning al least symmetric PCBs to have absolute 0,0 in the PCB centrum. Till now I assumed absolute coordinates as beaing rather unusefull. With this move I made it usefull.
In my solution whenever I just clikck E for edit I will see and can edit everything without the need to add/subtract the my reference coordinates.
I am planning to use KiCad as hot-key driven program (right hand on mouse). I suppose I would hardly remember only simple hot-keys. I don’t see myself using finger gymnastic Ctrl+R. If I had to use it I would probably use right-mouse click to find that function each time - much faster is E.
