I am putting vias along each side of a trace that is being used to attach to a surface mount antenna. I have been told in the past that this is good practice to line each side of the trace with vias. However when I start doing this DRC complains obviously. Whether the via connects to my gnd layer or has no net specified, I get the not connected error. Is there a better way to do this so that I do not get DRC errors. I really don’t want to disable this error.
Not sure if it’s appropriate for your application or not . . . but this gets rid of the DRC error.
Add a track (thin as you like) between the vias on a different layer . . .
Connecting the tops of the via’s with a copper track as RaptorUK suggests is indeed likely to get rid of the warnings, but:
Maybe you should not believe everything “someone” told you?
Applying random rules in RF stuff in the hope to achieve some kind of result is probably not such a good idea. (are you even able to measure or verify any of this?) RF is still mostly halfway towards crazy voodoo magic, and if you want to do things properly in this area, you need quite a bit of study and decent measurement equipment.
“Decent measurement equipment” used to be expensive, but these days gadgets like the nanovna are apparently quite useful.
glad someone else thinks this RF stuff is like voodoo magic.
So there is no way, in KiCad to have a DRC rule ignored for a specific footprint? It is always an all or nothing affair?
For more confirmation, go watch this video, especially the last 5 minutes.
Why do you conclude that? I don’t know much about these custom rules, but I guess it’s possible.
[a little bit later]… straight from the manual:
8.3. Custom design rules
KiCad’s custom design rule system allows creating design rules that are more specific than the generic rules available in the Constraints page of the Board Setup dialog. Custom design rules have many applications, but in general they are used to apply certain rules to a portion of the board, such as a specific net or netclass, a specific area, or a specific footprint.
On my playlist for tomorrow . . . Carmina Burana
One of many of Mikes awesome teardowns, still made me laugh…cheers.
