Reading this thread doesn’t give a clear picture of the situation which changes quickly. At the moment the RC1 Windows installer file is available in Downloads | KiCad EDA.
I downloaded the Ubuntu 7.99 earlier today, expecting 7.99.
Instead 8.0.0 RC1 arrived, replacing 7.99.
This required installing Kicad and personal libraries and also my settings if I wished. This was not my usual “download 7.99 and continue in the playground”.
What is a little strange is last year 7.0.0 RC1 replaced 6.0.11 and 7.99 replaced 6.99.
This year, 7.0.10 still exists but 7.99 has been replaced by 8.0.0 RC1.
Needless to say, yet another set of copies of personal libraries and projects have been installed in 8.0.0 RC1.
I am expecting 8.99 to exterminate this 8.0.0 RC1 in the near future; probably when 7.0.10 is replaced by 8.0.0.

On fedora (from copr) 8.0.0-1 is still a kicad-nightly install, and thus upgrades the 7.99-series, not the stable version.
Yea so “nightly” has never meant “7.99” or “6.99” and so on.
It means the latest in what is sitting in the master branch currently.
And that is 8.0 until we finally release the non rc, at which point 8.0 will get moved to a branch.
So, as I assumed, this 8.0.0 RC1 will be superceded by 8.99 in due course?
Yes, because you are using the Ubuntu PPA and have installed the nightly builds.
We don’t actually publish real “release candidate” builds for Ubuntu (for that we would need a fourth PPA just for release candidates). Once the RC is tagged, the nightly builds will start having a version of 8.0.0-etc until 8.0 stable is released.

On Windows, 7.0.10 coexists with 8.0.0 RC1 and I expect the release to overwrite the RC.
I presume that a future 8.99 will install a new grey icon
Last time a new major version was released (7.0.0), the actual release upgraded the previous stable version (6.0.x) and the 6.99 → 7.0.0-RC went on to 7.99.
Thus, if you wanted to have both v.6 and v.7 installed at the same time, one of them had to be installed outside of the package management system, for example as a flatpak.

Anyone know what Shape Modification is in the PCB editor right click menu ? I get nothing when I hover over the > arrow head . . .
It depends on what you have selected. IMO it’s not a good UI decision to leave menu items enabled if you can’t do anything with it, but it seems to work that way. Try selecting different kinds of graphic shapes. I can see 4 items: Heal, fillet, chamfer, “Extend Lines to Meet”. The last one requires exactly two selected lines.

Sure, RC2 is out, but behind the scenes it’s still a (nearly?) daily / nightly update. So I re-opened this topic and changed the title instead

The downloads page mentions version 7 and the nightly. The v8-rc2 is still the nightly PPA?
I just did an apt update / apt upgrade, and although some kicad-nightly stuff was among the upgrade:

Linux Mint is not officially supported and I’m not sure wheter to report this.
Is anyone else seeing this on Mint 20.3?
(Between around July and December there was a very similar issue for Mint 20.)
