I’ve used kicad for more than a decade, but I’m having a devil of a time getting things placed on grid. I’m using versoin 9.0.4-9.0.4-0~ubuntu24.04.1 release build.
The problem is that when I zoom in on the grid, my cursor X snaps to locations that don’t match the grid ticks.
I have placed a drill index and a grid index coincidently.
If I place a footprint, like a fiducial on a fine grid and it is no aligned with my 100 mil castellation grid, then I can’t ever get it back on the coarse grid again. It’s like all my moves are relative to the old grid offset. If it was 23 mils off the grid, then when I move it again on a 100mil grid it snaps to a new location some multiple of 100 mils away, but still 23 mils off grid.
I’ve also tried “Move with reference” and have search about a half dozen postings for “how to align a part on grid”. Nothing previously suggest has worked.
How can I make a small coupon where my castellation pads are exactly on a 100 mil grid? Do I have to put them all in a footprint because nothing can be placed accurately at the top level?
I’ve never noticed this problem before and have always been able to place my mounting holes exactly by going to a coarse grid and simply placing/locking them were I want them.
Now my cursor X doesn’t even snap properly to the grid ticks.
For a work around, I made a footprint for each of my castellated pads and put them in the schematic. Rather than using a large through via with really bizarre snapping properties, I can place my castellated vias by using properties->x,y_coordinates. It gets the job done, but not being able to go to a coarse grid and reliably snap a component to that grid is very very troublesome.
We had this problem in another internal proprietary layout system and everyone called it “grid hell”.
I found out that I can’t even draw an Edge.cuts boundary on a 0.1" grid. The cursor perversely wants to put points down something like 32 mils above and 7 mils to the left of the ticks. This is pretty much a show stopper if I can’t even get a board outline to draw onto the grid.
I’ll see if I can somehow regress my kicad install to the last known working version. Is it possible to go backwards?
