Currently I’m trust level “member”, however I already got assigned “regular” twice so far. But I got demoted twice again. Not that I care too much about this, but this did confuse me. Do you have to do something special to keep the trust level? Or is someone manually demoting me every time I receive the higher trust level?

Apparently the “regular” trust level is the only level you can loose by bot action. For more details, read:

All the Level 4 (leaders) are automatically assigned as Level 3 (regulars) just as all Level 3s are assigned Level 2 (member).
So this accounts for 35 0f the 59 Regulars.
A few were frozen at Regular to enable that member to write or modify Wikis, so, although missing in action for some time, still hold the Level.
I don’t see any reason to not raise you to level 4, so I did it. Be careful with your new powers.

The software uses ‘gamification’ as an electronic form of crack cocaine. It is kind of childish on a forum like this but there is really no way of turning it off. I may have locked a few folks at level 3 in the past to stop the automatic demotion. I do strange things from time to time.
Agree with you here. The last demotion was probably because I was one week on vacation and did not check this forum
