I recently tried to import 4, 3d models for connectors. Two had *.stp
extensions that worked fine in KiCad and FreeCad.
Two other files with *.STEP
extensions did not work in either KiCad or FreeCad.
The files are here:
Is there a way to import the *.STEP
models?
Looking at the files, they are all ascii files with ISO-10303-21
in the header. The working files were generated by Creo and Pro-E. The failing files were both generated by SolidWorks.
I only download the JXD3 file. It opens okay in a OpenSTEPViewer and in FreeCAD…

The JXD3 works as well for me in FreeCad if I create a new project, and then import, rather than just double click on the file and have FreeCad open the file.
Now, to figure out why it is not showing up in KiCad …
Turns out I did not zoom out enough to see the model:
Thanks for the help!
That is often the case… we never know the Software-used, Placements and Origins of the folks creating 3D models - especially those posted on internet…

Things are working well now
First I’ve really gotten into 3d modelling – FreeCad + KiCad is amazing!

You might want to look at the Explode Assembly Workbench
(and, learn TechDraw Workbench to make Exploded Drawings…)
