Hello everyone, My question is about the symbol library. Here I have selected and added all the files in the folder. They are all displayed too. However, they are not in a folder. So how do I get them into a folder?
I deleted the “junction box” folder in the symbol library, but it still appears when selecting symbols.
One method to organize schematic symbol libraries is to first create a KiCad project, then add schematic symbols to it from various sources and then Schematic Editor / File / Export Symbols to new Library. This method has some advantages with parts from different sources, as the schematic will be an overview of all parts in the library.
A more common method is to use the Symbol Editor as the library management tool. With the symbol editor you can copy schematic symbols from one library to another, and thus collect the symbols from various libraries into one.
I just discovered you can load a schematic symbol from a library that is not listed in the library table with: Symbol Editor / File / Import Symbol To do this, you first have to select a writable library in the symbol editor, because the symbol that is read is then added to the selected library. There appears to be a bug in this function (or I don’t understand it). I imported a symbol from another library, and KiCad just imported one of the symbols from that external library without giving me a choice of which symbol to import. Therefore the older method of first adding a library to the library table and then copying symbols from one library to another with the Symbol Editor is probably the best method.
@paulvdh, I know that. My point is not to import every single symbol, but rather the folder. But this also means that the folder then contains all circuit symbols.
Now each circuit symbol has its own folder. I also don’t understand why you can’t simply delete a library/folder.
The empty “junction box” folder for me must be somewhere in the project files. After I opened a new project, this disappeared.
When I reopened the project, the folder was there again.
Actually, you should be able to enter the symbols into the corresponding file by hand. Unfortunately I don’t know which file and the exact syntax.
Greetings
Library management is one of the things that improves very slowly in KiCad. Having “libraries” with just one symbol does not work very good, and combining KiCad’s limited library management with a file browser to delete and cleanup left over remnants is probably still needed.
I’m not 100% sure about your goal, but in principle I second paul’s advice to use the symbol editor to add/move/delete symbols from one to other libraries:
open symbol library, open library tree on the left side
open the library with the source-symbols
mark the wanted symbols (multiple selection possible with Shift/Ctrl-key)
RMB-click (Right Mouse Button) -->context menu–>use cut/copy/delete as you want
select the destination library–>RMB-click -->context menu–>paste symbol into destination library
I have now saved the library with Save As in the symbol editor.
I then viewed the file in the text editor. The link listed there http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tms320lf2406.pdf no longer exists.
