Switching unit from mm to mil in PCB layout

Hi everybody, I am new to Kicad and have recently given it a try. Since I always use ‘mil’ unit in Altium and Orcad, I have a hard time looking for place to change the default unit to ‘mil’. Although I found that the unit can be switching between inch and mm, I am wondering whether it can be changed to mil as well?

I am not quite familiar looking at those small numbers in inch :frowning: I googled around but did not find any clear solution.

Any help? Thank you.

You can change the units in “Preferences->General”. You can only select inch or mm, mil is inches. 1 mil = 0.001 inch.

Hi, thank you for answering, I actually found the ‘inch’ option earlier, but it’s just not so convenient and confusing as you can see in the previous picture with so many unnecessary zeros before the real, useful numbers. It would be great if it has something like this as you have more freedom to choose what unit you like.

That would be a good enhancement request.
Native file units I think are always mm to a precision of 1 micron, but once you can display inch, display of mil is a small change.

To me this situation appears to suggest a general move away from imperial to metric. The manufacturers have done it. Please, let’s not waste precious volunteer time supporting an outdated unit system.

@tanphuc Agreed. Users moving to KiCad from other systems will definately appreciate being able to display cursor coordinates in mils as well as mm and inches. It appears that this change was implemented or experimented with in the past, but then discarded.
