I am trying to install KiCad x86_64 on x86_64 Version: 7.0.2-6a45011f42~172~ubuntu20.04.1, on Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS, 64 bit, Little endian, wxGTK, gnome-classic, x11. I added the version 7 PPA to the repo list and installed from the terminal. The installation completed with no error messages.
The Project window opens as expected. The Schematic editor, PDB editor, Footprint editor, and Gerber viewer do not. When I launch any of these, I get a popup dialog with error messages Resource deadlock avoided, Error loading editor, and Application Failed to Load. The remaining utilities run as expected.
I have tried completely removing the application and reinstalling from scratch. Same issue. Syslog gives no indication of the issue. I thought 7 may not like the libraries not being in the default location - /usr/share/kicad - so I removed the custom paths, but that made no difference. Attempting to launch the Manage Symbol Libraries and Manage Footprint Libraries options do not launch the appropriate dialogs. There is no indication as to the issue in syslog.
Searching for the error messages on the web produced no suggestions. I am at a loss here, as there is no suggestion as to the issue. I would appreciate any guidance the group can provide.
I was previously using Kicad 5 - in fact, my first Kicad experience was with version 3. I skipped version 6, as I was in the middle of a project and learned long ago not to change software mid-project.
If you had some old v5 configuration files hanging around, it might be this issue, with the fix:
It’s been confirmed as an issue by a dev.

That did it! I thought I had completely removed the old installation before installing the second time, but I missed the config file. All is good, previous designs as well as the new demos are working as expected now. Consider this issue closed. Thanks so much, I was getting pretty frustrated.
