I find the colors used for this tooltip are making it almost unreadable to me (my eyes and/or my screen may be the culprits also). Are they hardcoded, or in a parameter file somewhere ?

They are hard-coded to a Red-ish (too short), Blue-ish (too long) and Green (tuned).
However, the background is picked from your system window color. This can be problematic if the window color is light. Please file a bug report for this and we can address it.
