SOIC-8 handsolder

I got a PCB from JLCPCB with SOIC-8 footprints for a DIY project. I was hoping I could solder the SOIC-8 chips but was disappointed because the KiCad footprint is too narrow. The attached image compares the PCB to an SOIC8 – DIP8 adapter. It is easy to solder to the wide pads of the adapter but not feasible for the PCB. What can be done? DIP8 has long pads, some other components are described for handsoldering but Package_SO has no such options.

  1. Solder 4 wires to one row of pins on the IC.
  2. Cut them all to the same length (around 5mm).
  3. Lay the IC upside down next to the footprint, solder those 4 wires to the footprint.
  4. Fold the IC over, like “closing a book”.
  5. Solder the other pads.

Looks like you picked the wrong footprint. What’s the MPN and the exact footprint you chose?

Hmm, looks like you have other problems as well:

Your best option may be to use those SOIC adapters and build it on Matrix Board

Is possible add so-8 handsolder, but normally with some of practice is easy to solder. The stain go under the pin without problem.
As you found crossed tracks, maybe you need redo the pcb, and use the DRC to highlight the fails.

Or your component is too wide. There are several different SOIC-8 footprints in the KiCad library.

I hope that from this situation you will learn to always double check the dimensions of both your physical components and the footprints you are using. Always. No matter where they come from. Do the same for pin numbering, pin descriptions etc. Sometimes even datasheets have errors.

Small outline integrated circuit - Wikipedia says for example: “Note that because of this, SOIC is not specific enough of a term to describe parts which are interchangeable”. “These dimensions differ depending on the SOIC in question, and there are several variants”.

I found a SOIC-8 does not fit between DIP-8 pins. A slightly larger adapter with the SMD straddling one row of DIP pins, with these cut short on the top side, works fine

it fits sideways – best with 4 layers so there can be some ground plane inside
