This video (for KiCAD 5.0) might help. You should be able to limit/filter the selection to a type of objects. As an alternative you could consider installing the KiCommand plugin and after selecting everything in your area of choice, run a KiCommand command to remove tracks (and vias) tracks selected remove. This will remove all selected tracks (including vias) and leave everything else. If you need help with this, let me know.

Thanks! Not only did the video show me how to filter selections but I noticed a part was locked. So with a additional quick search I learned about lock as well.
