I’m using kicad on a macbook pro. When I’m in the screen where I associate components to footprints, I can’t search for parts. I try CMD-F and CONTROL-F, but nothing pops up.

Are you trying to search for a component to map, or a footprint to map it to?
The easiest thing to do for footprints is to use the filter box (make sure you turn on the icon to the left of it first).
If it’s a component you’re looking for and most of your others are mapped, then the two big arrows in the tool bar will go to the previous/next unmapped component. If they’re all unmapped then I don’t know of anything that will search them.
