Hi, is it possible to find/ create customized footprint as slotted holes for multi-pitch (multi-step?) screw connection
Is it possible to include a link to what you are referring to? It might keep answers shorter and more focused.
Hi,
as image I wasn’t ableto find anything better than this:
I need a rectangular pad hole for M10 screw 30mm long
No, you need oval hole, and it’s easy to make with KiCad. Just create an oval pad with oval hole.
KiCad is limited to circular and oval holes.
The only way to get a truly rectangular hole is with a punch
As you seem to be aiming for a slot for a screw of variable position, an oval hole may be what you need
Manufacturers make holes by drilling or by routing with a round bit, it’s impossible to make sharp inner corners with those. Therefore there are no really rectangular holes in boards. If you really need a near rectangular hole you have to use graphic lines either in edge cut layer or in a dedicated layer. The manufacturer uses the smallest routing bit it can. They can’t make very narrow holes that way.
Because a screw isn’t rectangular there’s no reason to make a rectangular hole for a movable screw.
Thank you very much Eelik!
I will try with Pad Properties as for your smart advice.
I agree with you, I put that rectangular shape because it was just the best I have found to answer to Hermit with a sample PCB picture. I wasn’t looking for rectangular, my original meaning was slotted hole, rectangular plus 2 semicircles, not really oval. But slotted hole could be my wrong translation.
in italian slotted hole or buttonhole, among others for cloths, means this:
thank you
Best!
Yes, that kind of slot (slotted hole) is called “oval” in KiCad, although the term may be a bit misleading. A “slot” can also be rectangular in theory.
(For those interested, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oval. Would you like it to be called “stadium”? I’m not a native English speaker so I don’t care so much. )
(EDIT: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadium_(geometry) - “sausage body hole” could be my favourite.)
Thank you again, very good to know to use “Oval” in common speech and in Kikad!
In Mechanical Engineering also, when we say Oval we mean Stadium.
