Is there a way to open the selection filter panel independent of the properties panel?
How do I access the Selection filter panel in V8.0.9 ?
I’m using V9, but it might be the same.
View → Panels → Properties
And you will find the selection filter bottom left.
I think selection filters for the schematic editor are new for KiCad V9. I am also still on V8 myself.

Yes, open the Hierarchy Navigator, but you probably don’t want this either, Ideally you probably want a floating window for the Selection Panel, but that isn’t available either, maybe one day.
No, not in 9.0.4, but having opened both, you may then close either or both with the box marked “X”.
Either or both panels can be dragged to the LHS of the screen.
