Schematic: .kicad_sch to .sch

I want to move a design from Altium to Kicad (I’m a long time Altium user [since 1990s protel days!], but it is just too darn expensive).

I am able to import the schematic into the nightly build (v6). There were a few errors, but found them and deleted them from the altium schematic. They now import without a hitch.

However, I would like to use the stable release (v5.1.12) for my design work, but can’t get the .kicad_sch schematics back into .sch format.

I’ve read a couple of posts on going the other way (.sch to .kicad_sch), but nothing about going back the other way.

eeschema doesn’t appear to export to anything other than a netlist or graphics. I tried copy/paste, and can ‘copy’ from v6, but can’t ‘paste’ into v5.

Trying to import the altium schematics directly into v5 (using altium2kicad) results in a horrible mess.

Is there any way of going v6 schematic to v5 schematic?

Cheers, MM.

PS: Keeping a stable system (design package) is a big factor in my workflow. Hence I don’t want to remain with a nightly (although I am probably going to cop all sorts of flack because of that). Once v6 stable is released - no problem.

There is no going back but the developers feel that if you are starting now, V6 is the best bet anyhow. It is getting the most development time so problems are getting fixed pretty fast. I know what you mean by a clean system though. When I started Debian was WAY behind. Backports now seem to be catching up pretty quick but I’m set up to compile at this point so that’s what I do.

like @hermit says, there’s no easy way back.

V6 contains a lot of new features; if v5 supported them, it would just be v6.

Keep in mind that V6 is in release candidate mode and the planned release is before the end of the month…

Oh, I didn’t realise it was that soon… I thought it was still months away.

OK - time to settle in! Thanks for the advice.

Cheers, MM.

But make backups as you go, I have seen a some regressions pop up for a few days since the rc1 announcement
