Hi,
I am finding that overall, the schematic editor’s lines and text are too fine for 4K, even at 32". Is there a way to make them wider on a particular machine without editing the actual schematic?

I think the best you can do is to create a template project and save your settings in that. Then you can create new projects from that template. But overall, I do not change defaults much. I also have a 4k monitor, but with it’s 107cm diagonal, lines are wide enough for me. KiCad still does have difficulty with rendering text when it becomes small and does not have many pixels per letter. Maybe hinting works better for other fonts, but I do not change fonts in KiCad.
Thank you, but this should be a global setting, which does not affect the actual project file, as monitors and eyes vary. I am sorry to state it, but this is a common sense thing.
We have the functionality to override colours on a per-installation basis (for accessibility reasons), but not the wire / bus / whatever thicknesses. The closest you can get to this at the moment is by editing the wire thickness of the Default netclass in the Schematic settings (but as you note this is a per-schematic thing).
Please add a feature request on Gitlab ( KiCad / KiCad Source Code / kicad · GitLab ) if you feel strongly about this. There is complexity in implementation here (such as users wanting to override thicknesses, but not colours. And other thicknesses to think about - shape outlines, buses, etc etc).
Thickness of grid dots and ratsnest lines can be adjusted. I am not sure whether these are project based or global.
Another way for a partial solution is if there was a “default template” for new projects.
These are global settings.
I do not think that any Kicad feature request would be honored.
As I stated, it’s an accessibility thing.
Well, part of using a vector-based schematic editor is: it can be easily be adjusted, but not in this case.
I would actually be very happy to implement this. I (and the other developers) do care about accessibility. But it will need careful consideration to get right, and to work out how it interplays with other configuration options alluded to above.
What platform are you using?
