_saved schematic file suddenly missing?

Hi all,
Wrapping up the last stage of a large schematic / PCB before sending off for manufacturing.
From my original project.sch, KiCad generated a version of the schematic with the file prefix _saved_project.sch, and I have been working within that version for the past week, along with the _saved_project.pcb.
I saved and closed the .sch and when I went to open it again a moment later, it’s completely missing. Not in the project explorer, not in the folder itself. Not showing up in a search of my hard drive. The _saved_project.pcb file is fine, and the original project.sch is there, but the one I need is gone.

  1. Can anybody explain why this happened?
  2. Is there any way to retrieve a schematic from PCB or netlist?

For reference, I’m running KiCad 5 on ubuntu.
