Project not finding components in library

Hello i am new to KiCad and i am struggling to use it. I have tried to load this project linked here Mega2560 project and i have added the library to KiCad to which i can see Arduino_MEGA_2560-Rev3 in Symbol library editor and i made it global too when adding it. In the library i can see all the components required BUT my board has no components on it and when i load the .sch i get asked to remap the symbols and a missive error list appears with a lost of components not found but all the components are the library its not finding ??

What have i done wrong, all i did is install KiCad, extract the project i liked and loaded it and added the library, both the .sch and pcb is missing the components as is the 3D view :frowning: ??

For one thing, whoever created that project did not upload their Arduino_MEGA_2560-Rev3-cache.lib file. The -cache.lib file is necessary, unless you have exactly the same libraries that the creator of the project did.

I’m also going to guess that this project is for KiCad 4.x and you are using KiCad 5.x. The standard libraries are very different between those versions.

KiCad 5.x ought to be able to open files created by KiCad 4.x, but I suspect it is having problems because there is no -cache.lib file.

Unfortunately, I don’t know a lot about the process of importing 4.x files into 5.x, because I am still using 4.0.7 myself.

All the symbols used in that project are in Arduino_MEGA_2560-Rev3.lib, the -cache.lib is not required and no external libs are needed.

You know, it would be a good idea to check the source project before giving incorrect advice, especially to newbies :wink:

All the OP needs to do is add Arduino_MEGA_2560-Rev3.lib to their symbol library table (local or global, doesn’t matter).

This project looks seriously messed up. I opened it in KiCad 4.0.7, and didn’t have any problem with missing symbols. However, look at all the little open circles which indicate wires that are not connected. I don’t see how this project could have ever worked.

Isn’t this a bug in KiCad 5, then? The Arduino_MEGA_2560-Rev3.lib library is listed in the Arduino_MEGA_2560-Rev3.pro file, so shouldn’t KiCad 5 automatically add that to the new symbol table when importing a KiCad 4 project?

The remap process might need the cache lib. (I think wayne mentioned this some time back on the mailing list.)

That is a key point :slight_smile: I suspect the project was converted from Eagle, hard to tell how. Could have been a nightly version of KiCad.

I think you may have picked a bad place to start :frowning: There are plenty of other examples which are more likely to work, but since v5 is relatively new they may not work with v5 either.

If you are after the Mega project in particular, might be best to start from the Eagle files. I did a conversion a while ago but have not updated for v5. https://github.com/bobc/Arduino_KiCad/tree/master/arduino-mega2560_R3-reference-design
