From my point of view KiCad is build on the conception "one hand on keyboard and one on mouse’.
Your idea/question is trying to find a way to avoid using keyboard.
I just wanted to show that even during simple task of moving footprint you will have a need to use keyboard as moving without rotating is just lame (don’t feel this word, took it from Google translator).

That’s the difference between Kicad and what you are familiar with. Kicad is best used with one hand on the keyboard and the other on the mouse.

Other tools you may find useful:
Shift+O
for selecting the next footprint on any unconnected nets of the object currently selected.O
to select all unconnected footprints (and then you can filter by “same schematic sheet”)T
to select by refdes
Which is not to say there aren’t other ideas that may help here (I’d like to have a way to cycle though a list of conceptually nearby things, for example), but they also ideally would have a “fluent” UI that involves the barest minimum of dialogs and doesn’t require the mouse hand to come to the keyboard.
