KiCad version 5.0.2, under Ubuntu 18.04 64bits, ppa js-reynaud-ubuntu-kicad-5-bionic
My problem is:
While using Place Symbol dialogue, the window, that appears…, there is a search bar. So, if I incorrectly type the search item, then trying backspace to correct the last / previous character, the dialogue freezes [not exactly] until I select CANCEL button. Repeats everytime. Anyone has the same? Any workaround?

Ummmm . . . . . don’t make mistakes, and get it right the first time ? 
This sounds like an item that should be reported to the Bug Tracker. No matter how guilty the operator is, freezes and crashes should NOT happen.

I couldn’t repeat this problem with slightly different combinations: self-compiled latest code on Ubuntu or flatpak 5.0.2. Before reporting update to 5.1 and test again, it should be (almost?) ready in one of js-reynaud’s ppa’s.
That is what I think and hesitate to report as a bug or no. I didn’t compile it. I have no idea about the packager’s environment.
apt update does not show me new build available yet. I’ll try later today.
