Parts library improvements?

Has anyone considered the implementation of something like Altium’s dblib for parts library maintenance and making it easier to tie Kicad parts into an existing parts database? I realize this would be of less use to the hobbyists out there but for the more serious users it could make assimilating the Kicad libraries into a real parts database pretty simple.

Just wondering if anyone had considered this?

It’s been considered many times, but it’s not a small job and the people who are most interested in doing it are also far too busy with making other improvements to kicad. I think this should be a separate tool from kicad anyway, even if it’s a kicad-specific tool.
