Pads not visible in pcbnew, print OK

I’m scratching my head on this, tried all the buttons, but the pads do no show on the display. they print OK,. but it’s a nighmare to work the design. I have to do a fix on an earlier design. just in the layout.

any suggestions ?

Are the front/bottom pads turned on in the render tab (the tab to the right of the layers tab.)
