New icons in nightly

I was just pulling your leg a bit (re “brown”): https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Cordwoodcircuit.agr.jpg

@Seth_h I’m not sure whether you created the rotate_… and axis3d_… icons yourself or mainly added them to the repository.

  1. can the rotate_pos_y <-> rotate_neg_y be swapped in the code so “positive” is consistent for all axes following the right hand rule?

I’m not using the side bar tool button, so I stopped and wondered what on earth this icon was about. I couldn’t make sense of it without the tooltip:

Perhaps the concept of where it is will be more tangible… for a side panel there are several levels of abstraction, beginning with

Problem with that, is hopefully in v7 the right side panel is no longer only the right side panel and instead movable.

There’s no pipeline to leverage everything, like concepts -> candidates -> submissions -> contributions, and no galleries maintained by each person interested in contributing.

Reposting my comment from the issue tracker:

We are working on contribution guidelines that will enable us to accept merge requests from people who are interested in helping improve the icon set. Please note that in general we are looking for improvements and tweaks to the existing designs, not to take the icons in an entirely different artistic direction as has been proposed in some threads here and on the user forum. While there are a lot of good ideas out there, not all of them fit together in the cohesive way that we are
looking for. We do not want to treat each icon as an independent design (as was mostly done in KiCad’s past).

Adding some additional context to address MisterHW’s question:

Right now we are mostly interested in people pointing out icons that are not clear to them. Brainstorming concepts for changes is also useful. I would encourage people to not spend too much time on making actual polished artwork until we have those contribution guidelines published. We are unlikely to accept contributions that might make perfect sense in isolation but do not fit into the overall visual theme of the entire icon set.

So quick sketches here on the forum seem to be the most fruitful and effective way to move the state of the icons forward.

In terms of accepting contributions - I can only encourage the developers to drop by the forum and provide insights in this process of selecting what aligns with the set. You may not have a formal and authoritative guide ready, but you’re making these decisions anyway as we speak.

If you see someone selectively interested in particular icons, maybe it pays off to provide some guidance and let them do the work once you’re on the same page (that is… trust people to do a good job).

We’re trying things out and sometimes walking them back. That’s easy to do for us but would be more difficult and perhaps upsetting to other contributors. The idea of guidelines is to minimize the amount of “changing our minds” we have to do about people’s contributions.

Good point thinking ahead… but there will certainly be a default side. I also think that anything resembling a side bar is more recognizable than a stack of layers.

I’m also wondering whether there’s a better place for the button. It’s not untypical to have the “expand/collapse” caret button next to the panel, or have a divider that expands / collapses when double-clicked. What’s the concept there with AUI?

Actually I think I’d like to get rid of that button for V7, so thinking about its icon too much is not that relevant in my mind. We will have more AUI panels, and not have toolbar buttons to show/hide all of them I think.

Not too obsessed about it (as I mentioned I’m not really using it), but then something more recognizable could help others in v6.

Either way, could I ask you to have a look at the handedness issue I reported above (rotate_pos_y, rotate_neg_y seem to be swapped), Seth seems unavailable.

Could you please open an issue for this so we don’t lose track? I don’t want to use this forum thread to keep track of problems.

I’ve been sort of curious about inkscape, and now it’s reached version 1.0 I was hoping that most of the weird bugs have been fixed. So as an excuse to play with Inkscape I’m tinkering a bit with some of the icons.

Up to now I’ve resized a few from 2626 to 2424 and did some minor tweaks to make them lineup better on the grid, and I’ve posted the results directly in issue #6668 on gitlab, and the dragged .svg files appear viewable in that thread.

I wonder if inline .svg files also work on this forum:
autoplace_fields_2020-12-14
pads_remove_unused_2020-12-14
palette_2020-12-14
shape_3d_2020-12-14
shape_3d_back_2020-12-14

They look all right in the preview, so anyone who want to toy around a bit with the Icons in Kicad, can clone them from gitlab and post the modified .svg files here. This is of course no guarantee whatsoever that your artwork (hard work?) ends up being used in any way.

Everyone’s favorite critter icon is back! see https://gitlab.com/kicad/code/kicad/-/commit/500db27802e48a7ea36127a08299c2c296f0dd14

So what does it look like, not everyone can read xpm

I’m trying to get some more info…
I was just trying to decide if it had 6 legs, or only 4 and … something else on the front.

If you look at the full picture of the Coccinella Magnifica on Wikipedia you see the nice bright red and shining “shields” (Elytra) and the front side (Protonum and Head) with the white spots and that do not blend in with the rest of the body.

thats 4legs, not a bug

If you scroll down to the svg source and click “View file @ <commit>” you can see what it looks like. Or click @pauvdh’s link.

Seth seems to be reading this thread, because the icon has sprouted two new legs: https://gitlab.com/kicad/code/kicad/-/commit/3488ff4013f050ed29bd90cd4cc07c8326483b7b

And you guys think we don’t pay attention.
