There was a thread orum.kicad.info/t/potential-incorrect-footprints-for-mini-fit-jr/6006 about the some Molex connectors.
I think this is an actual problem. I had some boards made and the holes didn’t fit my connectors either. I don’t think this is due to cheap Chinese nock offs.
The part I wanted to use was: Molex 440680105
Mini-Fit BMI, 260C Wave Solderable, 4.20mm Pitch, Dual Row, Vertical, for 1.60mm PCB, 14 Circuits, Gold (Au) Plating, with Solderable Retention Clip
Documented here: 0440680105
The drawings on this page do indeed show a 4.2mm pitch for the pins.
The part I got from the library was I think intended instead for:
Molex 39299147
Mini-Fit Jr. Vertical Header, 4.20mm Pitch, Dual Row, 14 Circuits, with Snap-in Plastic Peg PCB Lock, Tin, Natural
Documented here:0039299147
The diagram for the later is a bit weird. Looking at the drawing in the upper left of the pdf on that page seems to show a 4.2mm pitch in the x and y direction and it’s says 4.2mm in the web page description but the lower right diagram seems to show a 5.5 mm pitch vertically but 4.2 horizontally. Not sure what to make of this or what’s wrong but this second one isn’t the part I want anyway. I want the Mini-Fit not the Mini-FitJr but I don’t see those in the molex library.
The parts also look different with one having a peg and one a retention clip which are NOT in the same place based on the diagrams and my fitting of the part I have to the board I built.
Is there a footprint for the first part the Mini-Fit Molex 440680105 with 4.2 mm pitch in X and Y. If not what’s involved in modifying the script to generate the right part. This is my first board ever and first use of KiCad. I’m really happy with the tool but lesson learned, check the foot prints more carefully.
Note if I can get some guidance I be happy to try to create a script to do the footprint generation and contribute it back. I am specifically NOT looking for someone to create the footprint for me, I DO want to use a footprint if it already exists and is correct. I might be interested in creating the script myself depending on what the process is.
