Latest Mac version that will run on Big Sur?

Hi,

How can I find out which is the latest version of KiCad that will run on Big Sur V11.7.10?

Thanks,

Graham

Unfortunately the documentation does not appear to have static system requirements information but instead points to a webpage which has probably changed over the years . . .

System Requirements

KiCad is capable of running on a wide variety of hardware and operating systems, but some tasks may be slower or more difficult on lower-end hardware. For the best experience, a dedicated graphics card and display with 1920x1080 or higher resolution is recommended.

Please check the KiCad website for the latest system requirements: System Requirements | KiCad EDA

So this can’t be used for version prior to the latest release . . . you will need to wait for an answer from someone “in the know”.

OK, thank you for trying to help.

G

7.x will.
Not sure about 8, but I don’t think so.

I’ve had some luck with OpenCore legacy patcher which has kept a 27” iMac 2009 (10,1) model running later OS versions. YMMV. I have successfully run Ventura (macOS 13) on this machine and it would run KiCad 8 - although the last supported OS from Apple was High Sierra (10.13). It was pretty stable and actually, reasonably fast.

My luck ran out when I foolishly installed Sequoia though (macOS 15) - although it works for most apps, KiCad (either 8 or 9) no longer runs. It was a bit much to expect on a 16 year old machine tbh!

So, if you are realistic and just need a slightly more up to date OS to support a specific app version, it might be worth exploring.
