I just downloaded and installed KiCad 5.0.1 on my MacBook Pro which is running MacOS 10.14 (Mojave). The color scheme of pop up windows, for some reason, is a light background with white text, and it is essentially unreadable. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to configure the color scheme of the software.

That’s an issue with MacOS dark mode, it was fixed in 5.0.2 but that build was pulled for other reasons. It will be re-published soon, meantime you can temporarily switch to light MacOS theme or use a nightly build of KiCad.
