Kicad hang on Windows 11

I have just installed KiCad 6.0.2 on my computer running Windows 11. Started to learn how this software works - have not been using it for a long time, and it looks much better now than last time I used it. Only problem is that it is hanging when I try to add a component. I was able to add one L7805 and one L7809, but when I tried to add a capacitor, system was hanging as soon as I typed the letter C. I tried to start a new project, but then I was not able to add anything at all, though I was able manually to scroll down the list.
I have a version installed on my Raspberry Pi, but I have problems making two screens to work, though KiCad seems to work OK.

Anyone that can tell me what might be wrong?

Best regards

Ulf H.

Can’t help with your problem but I run KiCad on win11 at home and have no issues at all.
Can you post your version info from the about menu, it may help someone a little more knowledge help you.

Hi Steve.

I think I am doing something wrong, but I have no idea where I am missing. Have been able to create a small project with about 20 parts, run annotation and check. Saved the project, but when I started up after about one hour and a reboot, KiCad was hanging and I was not able to open the project. Looks like I have to start all over again. Would be nice if there is a way to reset KiCad when this happens.

Running latest version available from KiCad.org.

Best regards

Ulf

I deleted the files at appdata\roaming\kicad\6.0 and started all over. New configuration files generated, and works OK now. After some digging, it looks like it’s enough to delete the kicad.json file

I’ve been running 6.0.x on different machines with Win 11 home/pro in these last months, however, I never found any issue related to the system/OS. Both working on projects created originally with KC 5 and brand new ones, with like three parts, up to hundreds of parts ones :man_shrugging:
I second the hypothesis that it was all related to a specific project/files issue.

There must be something fundamentally wrong with my PC or the installation I have tried to reinstall several times, but still does not work.
I am able, sometimes, to add a few components, but when I save and then restart KiCad will hang and I had to leave to delete everything and start from scratch.
I am now installing Ubuntu on a USB stick - cannot go on like this

The only thing I can think to do is to maybe do a sample project you can share the project here to see if others can open it. This will at least tell us if something strange happens during the save process.

OK. Just made a micro project, containing two items only. Saved it, and when I try to open, KiCad is hanging.

Test1.kicad_sch (13.5 KB)
Test1.kicad_pcb (50 Bytes)
Test1.kicad_prl (1.1 KB)
Test1.kicad_pro (5.6 KB)

Mod Edit: One zip to bind them all:
test.zip (10.0 KB)

Well, it worked on the latest Debian.

Works ok here on win11 as well.

And works on macOS too.

Thank you for your feedback. This means that there is something seriously wrong with the configuration. Have tried to uninstall, run Restoro to clean up and deleting the roaming profile for KiCad. Looks like I have to continue to dual boot win Ubuntu, which gives me the problem that left and right screen is switched when I start Ubuntu.

Just an update.
I have reinstalled Windows 10 on my system, and KiCad works like a dream. Looks like my system was really screwed up, but KiCad, and later FreeCad was the only software that was affected. Anyway, nice to see everything is working now!
