KiCAD 9.0.3 Hanging on Schematic Open

I just upgraded my machine from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and as such had to re-install KiCAD, version 9.0.3, build 26100.

I tried to open an active project and the project opens, but if I try to open the schematic or layout those windows hang and the program crashes.

I went and installed KiCAD 8.0.9 to see if I could get it to open on an old rev, but it says the files are associated with KiCAD 9 or later and can’t be opened.

I’ll add that this appears to have just started happening today, I did not have an issue yesterday with previously existing projects.
It appears to happen on any project I try to open currently.

At this point I’m at a loss and rather concerned about losing this project.
Any ideas?

UPDATE: I restarted my computer and can now open all projects successfully. No clue what the issue was.

Were any updates applied to Windows between yesterday and today?

If you create a new project/schematic do you see the same issue?

Do you see any crash error? (Check Windows event logs)

If the project is not confidential can you upload here and we can see if anyone else has the issue.

If your project is valuable to you why wouldn’t you have some kind of backup before you started saving it in V9 ? and yes you did save it in V9 that is why V8 wasn’t able to open it . . . learn the lessons from the mistakes you make. :+1:

Something else worth considering before the panic set in:
If it crashed when trying to use 9, so you reverted to 8.0.9, and couldn’t open the project because it was now associated with 9, this must mean at sometime before crashing your project was saved in 9, so not lost. :slightly_smiling_face:

OP has been updated.

UPDATE: I restarted my computer and can now open all projects successfully. No clue what the issue was.

Windows being Windows.

Well as the old joke goes: Small problem, reboot Windows. Big problem, reinstall Windows.

I didn’t have the chance to try any of these before restarting, which fixed it.
I didn’t observe any issues with any other applications when KiCAD was seizing up. Really not sure what was going on, but at least I can work in the projects without issue now.
