system: Windows 11 version 24H2
Hello, I have been working on a project for a couple of weeks and up until now everything had been super stable no issues at all. Today as I was adding in some extra net classes in the Schematic Editor I experienced a random freeze then both Schematic and PCB editor crashed. I did not think much of it so I opened it back up and went back to adding the net classes, a few seconds later it did the same thing. So again rinse, wash, repeat and it happened a third time. I checked out the Event Viewer and was able to grab a copy for each crash, if someone is able to understand the hieroglyphs from that just let me know and I will post it.
Thanks
The event viewer logs don’t usually help. But if you have crash logging on in KiCad, that can. Maybe file a bug report with the steps and include your ID from preferences
Ok, so I did turn that on, I was also able to record it happening in OBS, not sure if that would be any help?. It just keeps crashing back to the main project manager. But at this point I am not able to add any net classes in the Schematic Setup w/o it crashing. Also I will add that this wasn’t happening when I started the project like a couple weeks ago.
Reproducible is good (although frustrating for you)
Please open a ticket on Gitlab using the Help->Report bug function in KiCad
Can you please share what version you’re using, what your crash reporting ID is, and the project that is causing the issue? You can put these in a confidential Gitlab bug report if you’d like.
Ok ya I am in the process of filling one of those out
Oh and I am using version 9.0.1, is the reporting ID the one in the data collection tab?
I filled out a bug report on git lab tilted " V 9.0.1 crashing when adding new net classes in schematic editor".
That’s the one. Please add that, and the project that is causing the crash, to the bug report.
Not to hijack but 9.01 does indeed crash quite regularly, several orders of magnitude better than 9.0.0 and the crashes are quite predictable now, often it is the next operation after a save and is still usually related to adding or using 3rd party symbols or foot prints
Crash data is on so maybe it helps in the long run.
I also don’t know how much of my crashing is related to a bit of a crappy computer with only 4Gb memory - tolerable for now anyway.
Cheers
Similar problem, new install KiCad 9.0.1 alongside Kicad 7.0 on Windows 10. Initially stable, but after accessing some footprint properties (3D model) in the footprint editor it became unstable. Reinstalled KiCad 9.0.1 and it worked normal again, until I accessed the properties of another footprint (3D model) and the problem reappeared. 13710da3-4da2-4a2a-b350-bdaa41e4f611
Is this repeatable? If so, can you say which model and which property? And when the application then crashes? I.e. full reproduction steps please.
I reinstalled KiCad 9.0.1 to do some additional tests: caf629fb-b3b7-48a3-ab68-459a9c717f06 Used all default settings.
It turns out it’s pretty easy to make it crash.
- From within PCB Editor by calling a parts properties, either using the right click menu or hotkey [E]
- From within Schematic Editor by calling a parts properties AND calling the change footprint dialog by pressing the ‘book icon’ in the ‘Footprint’ field.
However I can change a footprint without a crash by calling the ‘Footprint Assignment Tool’ from the Schematic Editor menu bar.
KiCad 7.0 is still running without problems on the same machine, it has never ever crashed.
Windows 10 pro
AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon Graphics
64 GB RAM
2TB M.2 PCIe NVMe, 1.4 TB free.
Unfortunately, while the crash reports have arrived, they don’t contain anything useful - what’s happening is a stack corruption, so any debugging information is basically useless.
It’s very strange as we haven’t had any other reports of issues similar to what you describe. So this could be something specfic to your installation, library configuration, disk setup, etc etc… We should be releasing 9.0.2 soon; it would be good to test that when it’s released to see if the issue persists.
Thank you very much for your effort, time and the information. I would not be surprised if the problem is related to an incompatibility between my graphics setup and the compiler used. I will patiently wait for some minor versions updates and possibly undertake some fiddling with the graphics drivers.
I crashed when opening the ‘Footprint Editor’, and reopening it didn’t help. Later, I found that switching to a different language solved the issue. In the end, I reinstalled KiCAD completely, and that fixed it.
hello all,
if it can be of help, I’m also using 9.0.1 under latest Windows 11 and I don’t suffer of such crashes. Yesterday I have edited some footprints without any drawback.
Edit:
never mind! One minute ago KiCad 9.0.1 simply crashed and closed without any message. I was testing a simple example and trying to do some Spice simulations.
Is it better, for now, to revert to KiCad 9.0.0?
Which language were you using before?
KiCad 9.0.1 crashed for me at least 10 times last week. Not sure if it is identical to the issue described here, but I got seemingly random crashes as well.
Language: English
And it always happened while being in the PCB editor
No! Testing, which will be 9.0.2 very soon, is your better option, more than 150 bugs fixed since 9.0.1
