KiCad 7.0.7 Crashing when 3D Viewing

Hi,

Trying to pan, and rotate a PCB in the 3D viewer with all parts populated with a 3d model. It loads the view successfully and allows me to pan and zoom for a few seconds then crashes.
Is there anything I can try to narrow down if it’s an issue with the Mac or the software? Or even if it’s one of the models causing this (Enabling viewer logs?)?
I’m running on a mac running 13.5.1 with an AMD 5500m processor.

Steve

Is this 7.0.7 release or the Testing build?
If 7.0.7, can you try Testing?

Did you check if there is already bug report on gitlab? Maybe this one? (He also uses a Mac).

Please post the versions information.

Does this happen on all project or only on a few? If it happen only one a few, can you upload a example project? (In case it is the same problem as in the previous linked GitLab issue, you should upload it there, especially since @JeffYoung asked about it and the OP didn’t upload one).

I tried this on the latest testing and it still happens.
I’ve discovered that it’s just this one STEP file causing the issue. And strangely only when rotating in the Y axis. X and Z axis I can rotate all day without it crashing.

I’ve created this new project and it exhibits the same issue. It may be the same one as detailed in gitlab. But the crash happens only after 8-10 rotations in the Y axis.

Test3DViewerCrash.zip (329.0 KB)

I’ve tried on Ubuntu (7.0.7), doesn’t seem to be affected.
BTW, nice sensor! i’ve ordered a few already

Are the (GPU) drivers up to date?

If it isn’t a problem of your PC (for example outdated GPU drivers), make sure the developers on GitLab know about the problem and they have the files to reproduce it. Either by checking existing issues and if they don’t already have the files to reproduce it upload them or by creating a new issue.

Edit: Tried it on my Debian AMD64 and i was not able to reproduce it. Maybe a Mac only issue?

only when rotating in the Y axis

How did you rotate it? With a normal mouse? With the buttons on the top? Keyboard shortcut? With a CAD “mouse”? … (It would be easiest when you can say something like “Press button Rotate Y Clockwise 8 times in a row and it crashes” or similar, then it is easy to reproduce)
