I am running KiCad 6.02 on Ubuntu 22.04. The schematic editor works fine - and I have a design I wish to progress to the PCB Layout phase of the design, but every attempt results in KiCad crashing.
If I try to run the PCB Editor as “standalone”, then it asks if I want to use the default settings, and then crashes.
I am finding this very frustrating, as I have used KiCad over many years, and this is the first time I have had such a problem, and I cannot find anything online that guides me to a solution!
Any help would be most appreciated.
Please let me know if there is information I can provide to help establish the issue!
Many thanks,
Below is the information about the system (thank you hermit for your help!):-
Thank you for your positive attitude towards making Kicad a better project! I’ve upgraded you to ‘basic user’ in case you need to upload something.
One thing you could do is go to the help > about? menu and chose the copy to clipboard of your system information and edit your opening post with that information.
It’s to do with how these distro releases work. They take the app version at what was current at the time of the freeze, or more likely what the builders last successfully compiled. Then there’s the wx version requirement. So the PPA is needed.
Many thanks for the help - sadly, when I followed the instructions to upgrade, I get an error -

I have tried the usual ways of solving this type of error, and researching online, but cannot progress beyond getting the same error.
Any help would be most appreciated!
Thank you very much indeed for your help - I have not encountered using fuser to establish the lock - but that did work.
I have now managed to install Kicad 7.0, and can confirm that the PCB Editor has loaded without crashing.
My sincere thanks to everyone that helped!
