I was surprised to find out that the export function in the 3D viewer doesn’t allow me to export the fully populated board in STEP format.
Do we have any timeline on when this functionality might be available?

It’s available now 
A step file of the populated board can be exported from the board editor (not the 3D viewer).
File → Export → STEP…
several other formats are available, 3D and otherwise.
V5 had this. V6 has introduced a new checkbox to use similar named 3D models ie switch from the library WRL default to STEP.
Ah! The use similar named 3D models checkbox was the key!
