Installing latest version on Debian 13 (trixie)

I’ve been using kicad 9.0.2 (and now 9.0.3) under Debian 12 (bookworm); I installed it via the Debian repository “backports.” I’ve just completed a fresh install of Debian 13 (trixie) and I don’t know how to install kicad for this OS version.

kicad 9.0.2 is available from the Debian 13 repo but as I said, I updated my old Debian 12 to 9.0.3; I would like to stay on the same version of kicad.

If I am understanding the official Debian documentation, it essentially says that when a new version of the OS is released (trixie), then the previous version’s (bookworm’s) backports should be referenced as bookworm-backports-sloppy - I tried this but there is no kicad there. I then tried the “proper way” and attempted to pull kicad 9.0.3 from trixie-backports but also, kicad isn’t there either. I can, however, under Debian 13, pull kicad 9.0.3 from bookworm-backports (not “-sloppy”) but as I understand it, this is a big no-no.

So how can I get kicad 9.0.3 on Debian 13?

9.0.2 and 9.0.3 are compatible in that you will be able to exchange projects. You’ll just be missing bug fixes in 9.0.3 so if you are not affected by a bug it won’t get in your way. The latest is 9.0.4, maybe it’ll turn up in trixie soon. You’d have to ask the Debian maintainer for KiCad.

I just updated to Debian 13 and installed KiCad 9.0.4 using flatpak.

To integrate flatpak into Debian’s gnome software application I followed the instructions here:
