Installation Workaround Behaviour (good)

Hi, some time ago someone here gave me a useful hint: to install KiCad without admin rights simply extract the .exe with 7zip.

It worked well and the only disadvantage was that I had to configure the paths manually - no big problem, everything is fine !

Now I did the same with 7.02 - again everything is working.
Surprisingly the only-extracted KiCad already uses the correct path that I created manually !?
This is great, but is it intentionally ? How does it work ?

Your personal config settings are not contained in the package but created at your first run. Since you already had run a previous version, the settings were still there.

Hmmm, the previous Version 6 was also not installed in the classic way, it was “put” in a different directory. Even if KiCad had “looked” for existing config files their path destinations would have been wrong for the new version 7 - but matter of fact KiCad correctly used the new path I put the exe in before using 7zip.

So I guess KiCad actively searches for its subpaths at first start ?

Didn’t you say you had a previous install of an earlier v7? Or maybe you chose to migrate the v6 setup at first run? But you’ll have to solve this mystery yourself by looking at the config directory. Recollections can be unreliable.

I never had a “real” Installation because I simply can t install anything on this PC. However, I was just curious. Im happy with the current behaviour !
