Incomplete 3d view

As you can see, there is no 3D model associated with that footprint. All it shows is the pads in a 3D view.

All I want is the pads to show for now. They do not show unless there is an edge cut.

Ah OK, just add the edge cut then and you should have what you want.Just make sure it’s on the correct layer, it surrounds all your components/footprints and that it has no gaps.

So it was correct to say that for the 3d viewer to work properly all the time, one should add an edge cut.

And I will offer that because edge cuts are not always necessary to have the viewer work properly, something is not right. With that I have exhausted my ability to write absolutely understandable and technically intelligent posts.

Thanks for all the help. Back to working on projects.

It used to be (I think back in the v5 days) that the 3D viewer would show all components that have a model within the minimum bounding rectangle if there were no edge cuts. I don’t know if that has changed in recent releases, but I wouldn’t rely on that behaviour anyway. These days I put a board boundary since it’s easy to edit anyway.

Will do the same. thanks.

You mix 3D model being shown and footprint pads being shown. If you don’t have PCB defined (by shape at edge cut) then PCB is not shown in 3D view. Footprint pads are elements of PCB so if no PCB then they are not shown.
And I see that I miss understood your sentence:

As I assumed that you said that now 3D models that you previously didn’t seen now you see while you only sow the footprint pads.

It still does this, while stumbling through my first project I saw this while trying to figure out how to set the edges of my board. :stuck_out_tongue: At least that’s how I remember seeing it, I don’t think they were floating out in space…

I agree with this statement though. I ran into the issue of wanting something to partially hang off the board and not being able to because of the minimum bounding rectangle. Once I added in the Edge Cuts layer where I wanted it the board looked perfect in the 3D viewer.

It’s not the correct component but similar.

Thank You. I will use it

Hi, I found this but have not been able to add it to the footprint. In kicad6 what are the steps.

Thank you for the time.

Right click the footprint, open in footprint editor . . .

Edit footprint properties . . . in the 3D Models tab click the folder icon and navigate to where you have saved the 3D CAD file. If the 3D CAD doesn’t line up you will have to adjust it’s position so it lines up with the pads.
