Downloaded V6 with the instructions on KiCad.org for Ubuntu and used the terminal. Used the (mostly) default settings for a minimal installation.

This Project was created by a friend who installed with Ubuntu EVERYTHING for KiCad. I only installed the minimum install.

You probably do need the symbols library package. It isn’t such a big download, 3Dshapes is the big one.
