How to use "Unit Display Name"?

What is / was the intention of the “Unit Display Name” I can set for every unit of a multi unit symbol?

I would like to see it in the schematic instead of the automatic appendix.

I think the docs are pretty clear.

Schematic Editor | 9.0 | English | Documentation | KiCad

To add additional units to a symbol, set the Number of Units property to the appropriate number in the Symbol Properties dialog. By default, symbol units are named Unit A, Unit B, etc., but you can set an arbitrary name for the current unit using EditSet Unit Display Name….

Here I have renamed unit G of a 74LS04 to POWER.

What effect does this have outside the symbol editor?

Does the edited refdes not show in the schematic as U1POWER instead of U1G? I’m too lazy to check. Let us know.

no, it doesn’t.

That’s not surprising, because the default names A B C… are also not used but the settings in Schematic Setup → General → Formatting → Symbol unit notation

Therefore I wonder why there is an option to change the unit name, which doesn’t show up.

I’m curious about this one too. Perhaps it’s a rudiment?

It affects the dropdowns when editing the symbol in the schematic. The right mouse button > Symbol Unit shows POWER instead of G, and also in the Unit chooser for the properties.

The unit_name property doesn’t seem to be made available for display. Maybe that’s for later.

You’re right. Not very useful and unnecessary as is IMO. No “Second System Syndrome”, please.

On edit:
I played a bit more with this. There’s no way to get this to show on the schematic.
Developers, please explain the purpose of this?

Thanks.
