How to Split an Existing 5-Unit Symbol into 17 Units?

I’m trying to split an existing symbol that already has 5 units into 17 smaller units. Previously, I was able to split a single-unit symbol into 5 by importing the original symbol, creating a new one, and using the “Unit Count” option to assign unit numbers and split the pins using the pin table.

However, in this case, the symbol already has 5 units, and I’m not sure how to further divide it into 17. Is there a recommended method or workflow to achieve this in the Symbol Editor?

Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks

I’m curious to know what symbol that has 5 units can be split to a further 12 units giving the total of 17 units?

I just opened a 74LS00 in the symbol editor (which has 5 units), and then Symbol Editor / File / Symbol Properties / General / Number of Units and changed that from 5 to 8. And now it has 3 extra units. You do have to adjust the graphics and pins to make use of those extra units, but I don’t know why there would be any problem with that.

The maximum number of units that a single package can be broken down to is 64.

Interesting. I wonder what happens to the unit letter (if letters are used) after 26. AA then AB and so on? Anybody tried it?

Yes, after Z comes AA.

  1. Open 74LS in symbol editor.
  2. Symbol Properties / General / Number of Units and attempt to change to 80. (It reverts to 64.
  3. Open the Units pull down box at the top of the page.

Really, typing this post is more work then trying it out.

Nah, I discovered the 64 parts, so I’ll leave you or Paul to discover the the letter combination used for the 64th part. :grinning:

That’s easy, I can do that in my head without getting out of bed and using the desktop computer.

I’ve run out of fingers for a result.

You could use the finger units. Thumb has 2, the others have 3.
