How do you import a footprint from online into KiCad?

The footprint editor has an import footprint button. Import the footprint and continue as if you designed your own. (meaning save it into a personal lib)

The LM555CN is an absolutely standard DIL8, so why do you need to use a downloaded footprint?
When I do need a custom footprint, for some obscure filter module or RF part, I create a project specific name.pretty directory in my project working directory and add it to the footprints as a local directory.
