How to find and add suitable 3D model?

I have made symbol for the driver, and using Package_SO:HTSSOP-28-1EP_4.4x9.7mm_P0.65mm_EP2.75x6.2mm_ThermalVias as footprint.

The device is a DRV8313PWPR
The package name is “HTSSOP – PWP”

I guess there is some package model I could use? - but where do I browse them/specify which one to use?

My go-to for searching components is DigiKey. They also have links to CAD models for a lot of parts, including yours:

By the way: There is an accompanying 3d model to your footprint in the KiCad libraries.

Thank you.

How come it does not render once I selected that footprint? / and how to find/attach it to said footprint.
I guess knowing the above would also enable to to download from DigiKey

Sorry, my bad. There are a bunch of different HTSSOP-28 footprints, with three different EP sizes. Only one of those has a 3d model, and it is not yours …

The 3d models are arranged according to the same logic as the footprints. Your footprint is in share>KiCad>Footprints>Package_SO, so you would look in share>KiCad>3dmodels>Package_SO for the 3d model.

Let’s say a suitable 3D model in share>KiCad>3dmodels >Package_SO - or download one, - how do I make the PCB editor(?) know to use that particular file for the given footprint?
And is there a 3D model viewer/browser anywhere in KiCad ?

In footprint editor, click on properties:

Click on 3D-model tab:

You can delete or add model. Sometimes it need to be rotated and/or offset (especially for manufacturer-provided models, or something you found on grabcad.com etc):

I see no big problem in using model that has only different EP size.

Just a link update – my previous link to grabcad was just to the top level for stratasys products.

The goodies are in the community library:

Search for all kinds of 3d models – chips, esp modules, connectors, ball-screws, linear-rails… Lots of good stuff but quality varies. Step files generally available though some are solidworks-only files that need to be opened in solidworks and exported as step for kicad.
