Instead, I get nothing but the main/read-only library.

The view on the left is just a directory tree view, while the “tradional” way is to:
Which is a bit convoluted.
KiCad can open .pdf and .txt files from the tree on the left, so I thought I’d make a file association between a footprint file and the footprint editor, but I can’t even figure out the filename of the footprint editor. I thought I’m smart, so I had a look at /usr/bin and sorted by file date. (Apparently I upgraded to KiCad V8.0.6 on 2024-10-15) But neither the footprint, nor the symbol editors are mentioned separately.
